17 Mar
Debbie B

Debbie B

Name: Debbie B.

Location: Lawrenceville, Georgia

Sport of Choice: Cycling

What is you favorite distance/race? Love metric centuries (62ish miles). They are the perfect distance, not too long and not too short.

What is your “must have” item during races or long rides? Blueberry, coconut, chocolate rice cakes also know as Little Debbie’s crack cakes.

What are your goals for 2015? Seattle to Portland (200 miler), Week long MS Global ride in Sept (average 60+ miles per day), one half marathon and at least 2 metric century rides.

What does being a Tough Chik mean to you?  Being a Tough Chik means a soft place to fall when you are struggling; however it is also the place to go and get a swift kick in the a$@ when you need it. Love this group of ladies!

What is you biggest struggle?  Getting started. I work from home so making myself get up and go can be challenging.

What is one bit of wisdom you would like to pass on to others? Ride your own ride, don’t worry about how fast or slow you are, just get out there, pedal and enjoy the scenery.

Random fact or biggest pet peeve? Random fact: I have two fur babies, Riley and Jethro.

Nessa T

Nessa T

Name: Nessa T

Location: IL

Sport of Choice: Running

What is your favorite distance/race? 5 or 10k although I do love the Lincoln Memorial half in Springfield. My favorite race is the BIX 7. The most fun you’ll ever have on a tough course.

What is your “must have” item during races or long rides? The Roo Sport…holds your items and you don’t know its there.

What are your goals 2015? Be the best I can be and encourage others along the way.

What is your biggest struggle? Running in the heat.

What is one bit of wisdom you would like to pass on to others? Don’t compare yourself to others.

Random fact or biggest pet peeve? Love music on a run unless I’m running in a group.

Name: Jer

Location: Garden grove

Sport of Choice: Triathlons

What is your favorite distance/race? Race on the base, sprint Triathlon (favorites-swim and bike)

What is your “must have” item during races or long rides? Water bottles and fun

What are your goals 2015? Learn how to schedule “training” into my life schedule. Learn to put myself out there more and have fun!

What does being a Tough Chik mean to you? That other strong women are in my same shoes and we can support each other.

What is your biggest struggle? Running and training time with current life. Making time for me!!

What is one bit of wisdom you would like to pass on to others? Just keep swimming (Nemo reference). Feel like stopping-just go to the next short goal and the next.

Random fact or biggest pet peeve? Terrible things don’t happen – it is an adventure, a learning experience. Peeve: people that are not considerate of others.

2014 Team Tough Chik

1 Oct

Registration for the 2014 Team Tough Chik opened today.   I could go on and on about how wonderful the team is and how you must join the best team in the world, but I think it is much more convincing to hear directly from some of our existing team members.

“It’s a fantastic community of like minded active women who are extremely supportive towards each other whether it’s taking on new endeavors, braving your fears, or simply cheering each other on. Even in times of sorrow or difficulty we are always there for one another, lending an ear or a shoulder to cry on.  I have been a member from the beginning and I absolutely love it!” – One Fit Step

“This supportive group of runners, bikers, swimmers and all around athletes has become such an amazing part of my life.  When I think of my Toughies, sisterhood, support, guidance, mentorship, friendship, and HARD WORK come to mind!  Toughies come in every shape, size, background and athletic ability.  Being a part of the team is all about knowing that  YOU ARE TOUGH ENOUGH!” – Lisa Runs For Cupcakes

“Two years ago I joined an online based endurance team called Team Tough Chik.  I spotted Tough Chik products online and I loved the designs.  I wasn’t sure what to expect from an online team but what I have found over the last two years has been awesome.” – Running with Whit

“So it is officially opening day for registration to join Team Tough Chik for 2014 and while I am encouraging all of my strong women to join, I know that showing you why you should join is MUCH better than just telling you that you should. So here goes my top 25 reasons why I’m proud to be a Tough Chik, aka why you should join too!” – Project Girl Get Fit

Name: Gina

Location: Sumrall, MS

Sport of Choice: Running

2013 Race Plans: MTB: Long Beach Carnival Classic Half Marathon, Rock n Roll New Orleans Marathon, Crescent City Classic 10k, Jazz Half Marathon and several 5ks

What makes you a Tough Chik: I think that being a mom that has 5 kids (even though some are older and some are small) makes any woman tough! This also means that with so much going on, I have to train when I can. That usually means that I’m on the treadmill at 9:30 at night or I’m out doing my long runs with a headlight on. (*Safety first – if it’s dark, my husband goes with me while our older kids watch the younger ones.)

I also think that making the decision to completely change my life after my 3 yr old daughter was born in 2009 makes me pretty tough. It wasn’t easy. I’d been overweight for a while and stuck in the state of mind that I was just going to be that way for the rest of my life. I finally decided that things COULD change because I was in control of what I ate and what I did. I started walking and pushing her in a stroller. My oldest daughter would come sometimes and when she did, I would try jogging ahead a few feet. I don’t know what it was that had sparked inside of me to keep trying every time we went for a walk but it was there and it wasn’t going away. On February 8, 2010, I ran a complete 5k distances without stopping. It fueled the fire in me and I knew that things weren’t going to be the same anymore. Since then, I’ve lost 76 pounds, I’ve run tons of 5ks, 10ks, 5 half marathons, 1 full and I’m in training for my 2nd that will be February 24, 2013. “Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” – Gail Devers, Olympic Hurdler

If you had a super power, what would it be? To be able to run like The Flash, of course. 🙂  Can you imagine how much I’d get done??

Fun Fact: I’m in the Jan/Feb 2013 issue of Women’s Running Magazine in the Women Who Move section. MSN/Fitbie filmed me in December for their Everyday Champions series. It was released January 18, 2013.

Also, my feet are so big that I have to order men’s size 11 running shoes. I add pink laces and wear them proudly!

Name: Nancy…aka Fancy Nancy

Sport of Choice: running, spinning, softball

2013 Race Plans: This year I am gunning for the big one…the full marathon!  I am also shooting for at least 13 races this year with most of them being half marathons.  I can’t wait to see what 2013 brings!

What makes you a Tough Chik: What makes me a tough chik?  I’m up before dawn to squeeze in as many miles as possible before my family starts their day.  Being a mom to a toddler and a newborn, time is worth the same as gold but not running is not an option!  Sure my muscles hurt and my lungs are burning but being a healthy example of a tough girl is a perfect life for me!

If you had a super power, what would it be? I would love to be able to fly….imagine how much faster I could get around!!! I am fluent in Spanish, which many friends and coworkers call my super power since my students can’t get away with anything!!

Fun Fact: I’m pretty much your average gal but I would say something quirky about me is that from the moment the air begins to warm, I NEED to be at the beach!  I have lived all my life within 2 miles of the shore.  It is my calming place, my fun place, and the place of so many memories! I’m so excited to have two beach bum girls to share it with!

2013 Race Plans: Nike Women’s Half DC, Rev3 Quassy OLY, Philadelphia TRI Sprint, Rev3 South Carolina, NJ State Triathlon, West Point TRI and a few 5ks with my son!

What makes you a Tough Chik: I’ve never been an athlete in my entire life but found triathlon 3 years ago and am hooked.  I try very hard to not come in last – I’m often discouraged but keep signing up for races and scaring myself into training for them!

If you had a super power, what would it be? I would be a fast, graceful, beautiful runner and sing like Lea Michele (although not sure that’s a super power!).

Fun Fact: I’d never learned to swim until 3 years ago to do triathlon.  I’ve always loved the water but never knew how to actually swim and while I’m very slow – I can get to the end of the swim without much issue.

Meet Lynn, Trish and Danielle! 3 Amazing Toughies!!!

15 Apr

2013 Race Plans: Carlsbad 1/2 marathon, San Dieguito 1/2 marathon, Desert Triathlon Int’l distance

What makes you a Tough Chik: I keep at it (running, triathlon) even though I’m a firm middle of the packer. Been through breast cancer this year, too and the trifecta (chemo, surgery and radiation) of treatment.

If you had a super power, what would it be? Turn back time. 1) Have the wisdom I have now at my age transferred to my younger self. I’d tell her a thing or two. 2) Have the people who’ve passed be here once again.

Fun Fact: I didn’t start running or competing in triathlon until my late 40s. Finished an Ironman at 50. My husband calls me Tri-bunny.

Name: Trish

Location: Kathleen, GA

2013 Race Plans: Atlanta Hot Chocolate 15K, Museum of Aviation half marathon, Atlanta Publix Marathon March 17, Army 10 miler fall of 13

What makes you a Tough Chik: I’m a full time working mom of 3, who has been on Active Duty for 19 years.  I proudly serve my country and take care of my precious family.  I work hard to maintain balance and running helps keep me sane.  I finished my first half marathon on my 3rd child’s, 1st Birthday and thought I had met my goals.  My enthusiasm has been rejuvenated by a dear college friend and we finished my second and her first half marathon together recently in Little Rock.

If you had a super power, what would it be? To have super speed, not for running, but for cleaning the house.

Fun Fact: I was a river raft guide on the American River one summer.

Name: Danielle

Location: North Babylon, New York

Sport of Choice: Running

2013 Race Plans: I am signed up to run two marathons at the end of 2012, the Harrisburg Marathon 11/11/12 and the Brooklyn Marathon 11/18/12. I am also signed up for the Allstate 13.1 Half Marathon in March, in Queens, New York and the Diva Half  Marathon in October. I will participating in the Long Island Parks Winter Run Series, and the Parks Summer Run Series. I look for races every weekend that I am free, just to keep running. I have also signed up for the Warrior Dash in Windham, New York.

What makes you a Tough Chik: I started my adventure as a runner only 16 months ago on a whim. I was signed up to do a 5k with some friends, and I figured we would just walk it. I have a friend who used to live across the country who is an avid runner and I was talk to her before the race and she suggested I try to run the race instead of walking it. She also dangled the Diva half and asked if she could stay with me if she signed up for that. I said definitely and actually signed up for that race even before completing my first 5k. Well, the day of the 5k, I decided to run the entire race. I never thought I would finish, but loved the feeling of running. I knew that I needed to be serious if I was going to run that 13.1 miles of the Diva. I started signing up for races weekend and after weekend. First 5ks, then some 10ks, and when it was time for the Diva I was completely ready to run. I was so pleased with my time that I decided to continue running half marathons. This past summer I had it in my mind to complete a full marathon. Some thought I was crazy, 26.2 miles is FAR they would say. I knew that I could do it as long as I kept my head in it. It came down to a last minute decision, the Rockaway Marathon was the Saturday after the Diva Half 2012. I felt great after the half and felt ready for the full, so I signed up for it. I am so glad that I did. I completed my very first full marathon on 10/13/12 in Rockaway Beach, New York in 5:03. I am so happy that this was my first marathon. I now know exactly how far I can push my body. This made me a Tough Chik because I never thought I would ever run, not even a mile, I am looking forward to seeing what else I can do!

If you had a super power, what would it be? If I had a super power I think I would like to be able to heal injuries. I would love to be able to heal those who need it the most. Also, running sometimes comes with injuries, I have had some, and I have friends who have had some. If I could heal them, then we could be back on the road running sooner.

Fun Fact: I have run over 40 races in the 16 months I have been running and I have never worn any of the race shirts. I am saving them so that someday I can have a fellow racing buddy make a race quilt for me. 🙂

Meet Tough Chiks – Amanda, Hannah and Heather!

26 Feb

Name: Amanda

Location: Monee, IL

Sport of Choice: Running & Triathlon

2013 Race Plans: Ragnar Key West FL, First Midwest Bank Half Marathon, Ironman 70.3 Racine, Great Illini Challenge 70.3, New York City Marathon, plus lots of local races from 5K to Half Marathon, a sprint duathlon and a few olympic distance triathlons.

What makes you a Tough Chik: As I’ve said before “Tough” is a perception.  I certainly don’t feel too tough at times but my ability to forge ahead under “most” circumstances sometimes gives others the illusion that I’m tough.  I honestly just want to be a good example to my children and help them realize that even though life isn’t easy, giving up or settling is NOT an option.  You really have to go after the things you want and if you want health and fitness in your life then you will #MakeItHappen.

If you had a super power, what would it be? Is “Self Replicating” a super power?  That’s what I want!  I frequently find myself pulled between the tasks that need to be completed vs what I want to complete.  Or where I need to be vs where I want to be.  I’ve posted before about stealing time.  It’s a constant juggling act for me to get everything in and do what needs to be done.  As a result, I feel like everything gets shortchanged.

Fun Fact: You are the first person that I’ve told that I “might” be considering the NYC Marathon next year.  Shush……don’t let that cat out of the bag yet, ok?

Blog URL: http://tootallfritz.com/

Name: Hannah

Location: St Louis, Missouri

Sport of Choice: Running

2013 Race Plans: PF Chang’s Half Marathon, Go St Louis Marathon

What makes you a Tough Chik: I am not afraid to fail.  Everything else I want to write just sounds like a cliche, but really, I’m tough because I keep putting myself out there and doing the best I can with what life gives me.  I’m a slow runner and I know it, but that doesn’t stop me from getting out there.

If you had a super power, what would it be? Flying.  I dream about flying (who doesn’t?) and it just seems to be so awesome.  Forget running, I could FLY.

Fun Fact: I am a very passionate person.  I am a classical violinist, and I put the same passion into my running and my blog as I do into my music.

Blog URL: www.hannahviolin.me

Name: Heather

Location: Warner Robins, Georgia

Sport of Choice: running

2013 Race Plans: Seaside School Half Marathon, Hot Chocolate 15K Atlanta, Amica Fall Half Marathon, Clemson Easter Bunny Half Marathon

What makes you a Tough Chik: No matter what I always finish the race.  With 3 kids and a busy work schedule I don’t always get to train as much as I would like but come race day I give it everything I’ve got.

If you had a super power, what would it be? I would be able to freeze time or split myself into two.  There never seems to be enough time to get everything done so a super power that would let me get more done would be awesome.

Fun Fact: I lived in Japan for 4 years and my oldest two kids were born there.  I didn’t start running until a couple of years ago and now I’ve finished 5 half marathons.

Meet Team Tough Chik Memebers – Charene, Darcy and Jessica!

19 Feb

Name: Charene

Location: El Dorado Hills, CA

Sport of Choice: Running and Taekwondo

2013 Race Plans: Shooting for one half marathon per month and a full marathon in March 2013.

What makes you a Tough Chik: I’m always striving to be my best. Whether running a race, practicing taekwondo or being a wife and mother. I feel like a strong woman and can tackle any type of adversity or challenge that is put before me.

If you had a super power, what would it be? Speed!! I’ve love to have speed and strength like superman! (or superwoman) I’m not the fastest of the bunch, but would love to be!

Fun Fact: I’m extremely shy. I grew up shy and push myself every day to break out of the shell. Running races and practicing Taekwondo make me feel empowered and strong.

Blog URL: http://www.TheRunnerMom.com

Name: Darcy

Location: Houston, TX

Sport of Choice: Running

2013 Race Plans: Color Me Rad (Mar 2013); Electric Run; attempt at least one 5k a month

What makes you a Tough Chik: Until last summer, I thought I never would, I never could run. Ever. But with a lot of support and hard work, I’m running 5K races. I do this while still be 50+ lbs overweight. And working full time in a public service job. And being a mom to a precocious and amazing Kindergartner girl. And married to a supportive attorney/Navy reservist/amateur filmmaker husband.

And while wearing a Wonder Woman costume.

If you had a super power, what would it be? Control time. I never seem to have enough. And run faster.

Fun Fact: I’m a public librarian who specializes in fiction and comic books. I also knit and crochet; amigurumi (little toys) is a specialty.

Blog URL: chunkywonderwoman.blogspot.com

Name: Jessica

Location: part time Sacramento, CA; part time Dubai, UAE

Sport of Choice: triathlon, mtn biking, running

2013 Race Plans: I haven’t signed up for anything yet, but planning on Sea Otter Classic, hopefully two 70.3’s, an Xterra and a Ragnar Relay.

What makes you a Tough Chik: I love a good challenge and doing new things (on my athletic bucket list are a ultra-marathon and a 10km swim).  Once I have my mind made up to do something, it WILL get done and don’t tell me I can’t do it!

If you had a super power, what would it be? I think I’d like to be a ghost.

Fun Fact: I hate heights, spiders (or insects in general) and when I get really mad, I hyperventilate!

Meet Tough Chiks Hazel, Vicktoria and Elisabeth!

12 Feb

Name: Hazel

Location: Tucson, AZ

Sport of Choice: Running

2013 Race Plans: Boston Marathon 2013

What makes you a Tough Chik: Challenging my limits and learning to listen to my body in order to optimize performance.

If you had a super power, what would it be? Flash

Fun Fact: Love socializing and enjoying my hubby’s cooking 🙂

Name: Vicktoria

Location: Atlanta, GA

Sport of Choice: MTB/Cycling

2013 Race Plans: Ironman CDA, ID in June

Olympic Distance Tri in Naples, FL- January

Half IM in Columbus, GA- April

What makes you a Tough Chik: EVERYTHING!

Fun Fact: I am a cyclist who has signed up for an Ironman, having never done a triathlon and I can’t swim (but I’m learning).  Hooray!  Here’s to a fun 2013!

Name: Elisabeth

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Sport of Choice: Triathlon, Running

2013 Race Plans: Desert Tri International; Wildflower Long Course AND Olympic (fundraising with TNT for Wildflower Long); Vineman 70.3; Hood to Coast; Marine Corps Marathon and New York City Marathon.

What makes you a Tough Chik: I don’t give up – ever.  I could barely ride my road bike a year ago, and in late July I completed an ironman – Vineman 140.6! Even after I crashed my bike and got a concussion last December, after only about a month and a half of cycling, I got back out there.  I will work through any obstacle and keep going, no matter what.  Life is too short to sit on the side lines or wait for the perfect moment, so I seize every moment.  That’s what makes me a Tough Chik.

If you had a super power, what would it be? Super speed (I wanna be fast!), or super strength (being strong is awesome!), or invisibility (that could be REALLY interesting…), or the ability to breathe underwater (see below – I love OWS). I can’t pick! 😉

Fun Fact: My favorite workout is open water swimming (OWS) – I LOVE ocean swimming, even in the dirty (polluted) Santa Monica Bay.  And, I am secretly starting to love cycling.  Sh! Don’t tell anyone, actually go for it, they’d never believe you! 😉

I’m an L.A. girl through and through, born and raised, laid back, loving the LA lifestyle.

Watch out for these Tough Chiks! Crystal, Heidi and Walisa are TOUGHIES!!!

31 Jan

Name: Crystal Fun2Race

Location: Dayville, CT

Sport of Choice: Mountain Biking, Cyclocross, Archery, Swimming & sometimes Running

2013 Race Plans: I’m not sure yet how much I can cram into one year, but I would like to do the following: a 6/12 hour mountain bike race, 4-5 xc mountain bike races, 8-10 cyclocross races, a marathon, 2 5ks, at least one 2.4 mile swim race, national outdoor archery championships, and anything else that comes up and looks fun!

What makes you a Tough Chik: I’m a tough chick because I am stubborn and don’t like to give up. I’m not afraid to weight train, get dirty or push through a tough workout. I like to challenge myself to try new things, and I encourage those around me to become more active in their own lives

If you had a super power, what would it be? My ideal super power would be teleportation. We waste so much of our lives traveling between one place and another, so this would free me up to do so much more with my time. Also, I would be able to easily visit all of my out of state family and friends on a regular basis!

Fun Fact: In 2001, I had the opportunity to train as a member of team USA (swimming) in New Zealand and Australia in preparation for competing in the Australian Gold Coast Challenge, where I took silver in both of my events.

Blog URL: http://crystalfun2race.wordpress.com

Name: Heidi

Location: Oak Ridge, Tennessee

Sport of Choice: Running

2013 Race Plans: So far: Jan 1 – New Year’s Day 5k (Knoxville, TN), Jan 13 – Hot Chocolate 15k (Atlanta, GA), April 27 – Country Music Half Marathon (Nashville, TN), September 1 – Virginia Beach Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon (VA Beach, VA), November 24 – Secret City Half Marathon (Oak Ridge, TN)

What makes you a Tough Chik: In October 2008, someone took a photo of me at a company picnic. When I saw that picture all my denial peeled away…I was morbidly obese. I don’t know how I had really ignored it for so long. I really wasn’t as unhealthy as I could have been, but I knew it was a matter of time. Since then I have had to suck it up and lose 80lbs. On January 1, 2010 a friend talked me into running a New Year’s Day 5k and I was able to run/walk it and cried when I finished. I was hooked. Since then I have finished countless smaller races, 11 half marathons, and one full marathon. All the while I am a wife, Mom, friend, full time graphic designer, etc. I am a tough chik because I took responsibility for my body and my health and have made the change. And because of that many others have started their own journeys to be healthy and some are even runners now!

If you had a super power, what would it be? Being able to eat as much chocolate as I want without gaining weight. LOL!!!

Fun Fact: I have a secret obsession with the paranormal and would love to go on a ghost hunt. 🙂

Blog URL: http://runningawayintn.wordpress.com/

Name: Walisa

Location: Cleveland, OH

Sport of Choice: Running, Kickboxing, and Spin Cycle

2013 Race Plans: To complete my first Half-Marathon (Cleveland- Rite Aid Half and Marathon). My friends and I will be first-timers in the following races:  Tough Mudder, Foam Fest, and 5K Color Run

What makes you a Tough Chik: I make attainable goals and work hard to achieve. It does not matter how long it takes to achieve, I start what I finish. “Cannot” is not in my vocabulary. I am in no way perfect, but I “try” my best to attain

If you had a super power, what would it be? To clean the house with a snap of a finger.

Fun Fact: “I have an APP for that!”
