Introducing Jennifer, Stacie and Rebecca! Welcome to Team Tough Chik!

28 May

Name: Jennifer

Location: Western New York Southerntier

Sport of Choice: Marathon, Triathlon

2013 Race Plans: Nothing concrete, but I want to get back to my distance racing (I miss the time to myself the training gives me,) so absolutely a half marathon (maybe two) looking at Virginia Beach Shamrock in March, and Rochester MVP in September. For the summer, two sprint distance triathlons. Probably Musselman again, and maybe A Tri In The Buff or Owascoman?!

Plenty of local(ish) 5ks and 10ks.

What makes you a Tough Chik: I am a Tough Chik because ~ I have Fibromyalgia. I have been combating the symptoms(chronic fatigue and pain) and related conditions of this  auto-immune disorder with exercise and diet. I began with marathoning (a year prior to my 35th birthday, as a gift to myself) to give me a goal, and keep me on track. Because I am very competitive and driven, the training provides a “no excuses” routine for me. Tri-ing was the next step in my journey. I wanted my exercise plan to be more eclectic and wished for the challenge. It has been the right choice. I am more balanced, and recover more quickly. The health, strength, and confidence it gives me are immeasurable. The hardest part about training for the race is finding the time to get all the training in. I am a Mom of two wonderful little girls (6 and 9), a home daycare provider, a Girl Scout leader/trainer, and a soccer coach. On “bad” days with my condition, I find the ability to push through it, because I am tenacious. I have a separate planner with my scheduled trainings in it. I work with my family’s schedule, and my work/volunteer schedule to get each days training done, whenever I can. Sometimes this means getting up early, sometimes it means staying up later, often times it means sacrifice, but the payoff is worth it. So far I have completed several 5ks, 8ks, 10ks, 3 half marathons, a 14 mile trail race, 3 full marathons, a duathlon, 3 triathlons, and 3 obstacle style mud runs. Every race has helped me feel inspired (by racers, especially ones meeting challenges, and my own desire to overcome my obstacle,) hopeful (I usually get a little emotional,) and accomplished (the culmination of all the hard work.) I am jazzed for the rest of the day (and sometimes into the next week!) In 2012 I challenged myself to go further ~ Because my “good months” are March – September, I made my goal to do 2 races each month, with a total of 14 for the 7 month period. They include ~ 5ks, a 21k bike ride, a 33 mile bike ride, a duathlon, 2 triathlons, 2 mud/obstacle runs, and a color run. I did 16 races in all. My motto is, “Because today I can.” Do what you are able to, knowing that you can do it, the reward is immeasurable. I do this so I can be a better person, mother, and woman, I am proud to call myself a marathoner, a triathlete, and one tough mama!!

If you had a super power, what would it be? This is a good one…I thought a long time. The ability to heal others and myself quickly. I know, not very Marvel Comics, but it’s what I would want.

Fun Fact: I love to cook!!! I wanted to open a Lunchette in the college town down the road called Simply Soups (serving artisan breads with the daily specials.)

Name: Stacie

Location: Chehalis, WA

Sport of Choice: Running

2013 Race Plans: I’m setting a goal to run 15 half marathons.  I would love to break the 2 hour mark.  If training goes well then my ultimate plan is to run the Portland Marathon for the 5th time.  I really want to set a marathon PR.

What makes you a Tough Chik: I have completed 4 marathons, 16 half marathons, an ultra, a sprint-tri, all after losing 80+ pounds.  I have battled a few knee issues and was finally coming back strong.  Just had to suffer through sitting out my first race ever after fracturing my left foot in two places and tearing a tendon(not running related).  I refuse to start completely over so I’m doing arm weights, ab work, and other misc. exercises until I am able to start running again.

If you had a super power, what would it be? I’d love to be able to fly or run really fast 🙂

Fun Fact: I love thunder & lightning storms.  I’m super excited to be a part of Team Tough Chik 2013

Location: Hickory, NC

Sport of Choice: Running

2013 Race Plans: Taking on my first full in 2013!  Shamrock in March!  After that, planning on the Diva Half in Myrtle Beach, Richmond Half in Richmond and …… still filling in the rest of the year.  It will be epic!

What makes you a Tough Chik: This is a hard one, I suspect for many of us to answer.  I guess at the end of the day, what makes me tough, is that I keep going.  I started running just over 2 years ago and have battled injuries along the way as most anyone in running has.  I kept going.  Between regular ‘use’ injuries from running, falling (I’m not the most graceful by far!), running ailments (you know…chafing, wrong clothes, wrong shoes, the pieces we don’t talk about…. but we all know what those are ha ha), I’ve kept going.  I’m super excited to be taking on my first full next year in 2013!  Nervous, but super excited!  Can’t wait to see what 2013 has to offer! Bring it!

If you had a super power, what would it be? If I had a super power…I would love to be able to make people laugh…. randomly.  Like when you look at someone and I could think something, and then they would laugh.  Laughter heals so much pain!!

Fun Fact: Can’t wait to get my next tattoo after my full!

Run River City – Team Tough Chik Relay

23 May

Back at the beginning of the year, I got a message on Facebook from Jess asking if I would be a part of a Team Tough Chik marathon relay.  I don’t think that I would actually fly out for the race, but my cousin lives in Chicago and she had just had a baby, so it was perfect!

On Thursday I flew to Chicago and met my new favorite person, Evelyn.  She is the best baby!  So happy and all smiles.

On Friday evening I took the train to Oak Forest and was greeted by the one and only Too Tall Fritz!  When you meet your on-line “friends” in real life, it is always like a first date and can be kind of awkward.  Not with Amanda!  We greeted each other with a big hug and we clicked immediately!  She graciously allowed me to stay with her on Friday night so I could run with her and her F-NRC running group.  Susan, another Team Tough Chik member, is also part of F-NRC and I was able to run and chat with her.  What a sweet gal!

Amanda, Susan and Me

Amanda, Susan and Me

After our run, we stopped by a local 5K to cheer on some more F-NRC peeps and Joyelle, another Team Tough Chik member.  So lucky to meet my teammates!

On Saturday afternoon Amanda and I headed to Peoria.  Packet pick-up was pretty easy but the expo was small and sparse.  I have to admit that I was a little bummed because rarely do I get to attend an expo that I am not working, but it is the first year of the race, so I am sure it will grow tremendously!  On Saturday evening we had a team meeting at our hotel when I got the chance to meet Carmen and Jess.

Me, Jess, Carmen and Amanda

Me, Jess, Carmen and Amanda

Carmen was our 1st leg, but due to a recent injury, she had to sit this race out and found a replacement with Katie.  If you would like to read Carmen’s race report and her perspective, here is a like to her post.

Katie handed off to Amanda and her long legs booked it!

Amanda handing off to me

Amanda handing off to me

I was leg 3, the shortest leg..THANK YOU! This was my first relay and it really pushes you to know that 3 other people are counting on you to perform.  I wasn’t running great.  I will be the first to admit that I am not the fastest runner and I made sure my team was aware of my pace.  If they wanted to win, I was not the gal to have on your team!  But we all agreed that we were in it for fun and not to break any speed records.  Little did I know, that prior to the race another local blogger threw down the gauntlet.  We all have a little of a competitive streak and I will be the first to tell you that I can be pretty competitive, so when I found out that another team was “out to get us”….GAME ON!  All of this is going through my head while I am watching my pace slow.  The reason my leg was the shortest, is because it was the hilliest.  I didn’t think Illinois was hilly, I was wrong.  I live in a very hilly area, so this wasn’t unusual…just not what I had planned.  I knew that I wasn’t running as strong as I could, but I was giving it my all and I thought to myself, all I can do is apologize.  Amanda had mentioned that it is pretty awesome when a runner sprints to the next for a hand off, so I kicked it up a notch and sprinted to Jess.

You can see it on my face, I was pushing!

You can see it on my face, I was pushing!

Jess took off for the last leg and if you want to read her post, go here…http://www.runwithjess.com/2013/05/race-recap-river-city-marathon-relay.html

We were able to run in as a team and it will be the first and last time I cross a marathon finish line in under 4 hours!

Team Tough Chik

Team Tough Chik

We finished in 3:57 and were the 4th women’s relay to finish (but 2 and 3 were in high school, so we came in second in my head).  And we did finish ahead of that other team, in case you were wondering.

734245_10200187893795104_249864450_nYup, I am the slowest!  Luckily Katie was wicked fast and helped make up for my pace.  But that wasn’t what this race was about.  It was about having fun and doing something as a team.  I have to say, I was blown away with these 3 women.  They are amazing!  And cool and fun and kind and just plain nice.  We had a great time and really got along very well!

A little cheesy!

A little cheesy!

Overall, I had a blast in Chicago and in the rest of Illinois as well!  I am already thinking about heading back next year!

Name: Charene

Location: El Dorado Hills, CA

Sport of Choice: Running and Taekwondo

2013 Race Plans: Shooting for one half marathon per month and a full marathon in March 2013.

What makes you a Tough Chik: I’m always striving to be my best. Whether running a race, practicing taekwondo or being a wife and mother. I feel like a strong woman and can tackle any type of adversity or challenge that is put before me.

If you had a super power, what would it be? Speed!! I’ve love to have speed and strength like superman! (or superwoman) I’m not the fastest of the bunch, but would love to be!

Fun Fact: I’m extremely shy. I grew up shy and push myself every day to break out of the shell. Running races and practicing Taekwondo make me feel empowered and strong.

Name: Darcy

Location: Houston, TX

Sport of Choice: Running

2013 Race Plans: Color Me Rad (Mar 2013); Electric Run; attempt at least one 5k a month

What makes you a Tough Chik: Until last summer, I thought I never would, I never could run. Ever. But with a lot of support and hard work, I’m running 5K races. I do this while still be 50+ lbs overweight. And working full time in a public service job. And being a mom to a precocious and amazing Kindergartner girl. And married to a supportive attorney/Navy reservist/amateur filmmaker husband.

And while wearing a Wonder Woman costume.

If you had a super power, what would it be? Control time. I never seem to have enough. And run faster.

Fun Fact: I’m a public librarian who specializes in fiction and comic books. I also knit and crochet; amigurumi (little toys) is a specialty.

Name: Jessica

Location: part time Sacramento, CA; part time Dubai, UAE

Sport of Choice: triathlon, mtn biking, running

2013 Race Plans: I haven’t signed up for anything yet, but planning on Sea Otter Classic, hopefully two 70.3’s, an Xterra and a Ragnar Relay.

What makes you a Tough Chik: I love a good challenge and doing new things (on my athletic bucket list are a ultra-marathon and a 10km swim).  Once I have my mind made up to do something, it WILL get done and don’t tell me I can’t do it!

If you had a super power, what would it be? I think I’d like to be a ghost.

Fun Fact: I hate heights, spiders (or insects in general) and when I get really mad, I hyperventilate!

Watch out for these Tough Chiks! Crystal, Heidi and Walisa are TOUGHIES!!!

31 Jan

Name: Crystal Fun2Race

Location: Dayville, CT

Sport of Choice: Mountain Biking, Cyclocross, Archery, Swimming & sometimes Running

2013 Race Plans: I’m not sure yet how much I can cram into one year, but I would like to do the following: a 6/12 hour mountain bike race, 4-5 xc mountain bike races, 8-10 cyclocross races, a marathon, 2 5ks, at least one 2.4 mile swim race, national outdoor archery championships, and anything else that comes up and looks fun!

What makes you a Tough Chik: I’m a tough chick because I am stubborn and don’t like to give up. I’m not afraid to weight train, get dirty or push through a tough workout. I like to challenge myself to try new things, and I encourage those around me to become more active in their own lives

If you had a super power, what would it be? My ideal super power would be teleportation. We waste so much of our lives traveling between one place and another, so this would free me up to do so much more with my time. Also, I would be able to easily visit all of my out of state family and friends on a regular basis!

Fun Fact: In 2001, I had the opportunity to train as a member of team USA (swimming) in New Zealand and Australia in preparation for competing in the Australian Gold Coast Challenge, where I took silver in both of my events.

Name: Heidi

Location: Oak Ridge, Tennessee

Sport of Choice: Running

2013 Race Plans: So far: Jan 1 – New Year’s Day 5k (Knoxville, TN), Jan 13 – Hot Chocolate 15k (Atlanta, GA), April 27 – Country Music Half Marathon (Nashville, TN), September 1 – Virginia Beach Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon (VA Beach, VA), November 24 – Secret City Half Marathon (Oak Ridge, TN)

What makes you a Tough Chik: In October 2008, someone took a photo of me at a company picnic. When I saw that picture all my denial peeled away…I was morbidly obese. I don’t know how I had really ignored it for so long. I really wasn’t as unhealthy as I could have been, but I knew it was a matter of time. Since then I have had to suck it up and lose 80lbs. On January 1, 2010 a friend talked me into running a New Year’s Day 5k and I was able to run/walk it and cried when I finished. I was hooked. Since then I have finished countless smaller races, 11 half marathons, and one full marathon. All the while I am a wife, Mom, friend, full time graphic designer, etc. I am a tough chik because I took responsibility for my body and my health and have made the change. And because of that many others have started their own journeys to be healthy and some are even runners now!

If you had a super power, what would it be? Being able to eat as much chocolate as I want without gaining weight. LOL!!!

Fun Fact: I have a secret obsession with the paranormal and would love to go on a ghost hunt. 🙂

Introducing Ali, Lisa and Christel – a trainer, a Canadian and a Dutch

17 May

Name: Alisson (Trainer Ali)

Location: Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

Sport of Choice: Triathlon

Hobbies: Weight Training & Hiking

2012 Race Plans: OC International Triathlon, Lake Mission Viejo, Ca

What makes you a Tough Chik: I am a wife, mother, grandmother, personal trainer, triathlete….what could be tougher than that?

Blog: TrainerAliSays.wordpress.com

Fun Fact: I love triathlon because I can’t do the same thing over and over again.  I need a constant change! (And she is the original Tough Chik (Shannon’s) coach, I love Trainer Ali!!!)

Name: Lisa

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Sport of Choice: Running

Hobbies: Barre class, and this summer I hope to start rowing.

2012 Race Plans: Tinkerbell Half Marathon, Ottawa race weekend, Army Run half marathon, and at least one other half (either NWM or Disney Wine & Dine). I would also love to try a mud run of some form this year.

What makes you a Tough Chik: I think what makes me a Tough Chik is the fact that if I set my mind on something, I will accomplish my goals. I am not afraid to work hard for something I believe in and I am now including time for myself into this equation. Working full-time, teaching part time, working towards my Masters degree in Educational Leadership as well as being a mother and wife does not always allow for a lot of ‘spare’ time. However, I have found such great importance in having fun in what I do, and making each moment count- including running.  I believe a Tough Chik knows how to get a job done, while having fun doing it!

Blog: http://runningtutu.wordpress.com/

Fun Fact: I have a ‘slight’ addiction to running gear, and I can honestly say that I can be motivated to run long distances (which are new to me ) by a cute running skirt, socks, or shirt. Isn’t admitting you have a problem the first step? 😉

Name: Christel

Location: Utrecht, the Netherlands

Sport of Choice: Running – also love cycling (road bike)

Hobbies: Skiing (I used to ski competitively)

2012 Race Plans: Uhm…I’m one of those nuts that’s afraid to jinx the whole thing when I tell others about it. I have my hopes set on running an ultra I’ve been dreaming about for years. 🙂 Mountains. 🙂

What make you a Tough Chik: Tough? Moi? Neeehhhh… Does running mountain races / ultras in a skirt count?

Blog: http://www.sillygirlrunning.com

Fun Fact: Give me some time to think about that one, okay? 😉

Good Monday Morning! Get your weekly inspiration from April, Christy and Ellen

Hobbies: Being with family, quilting, reading, watching TV

2012 Race Plans: Disneyland Tinkerbell Half Marathon, LA Chinatown 5K, OC Marathon, Long Beach Half Marathon.  Thinking about doing the Tinsel Tri again this year.

What makes you a Tough Chik: Am I a Tough Chik?  I never really thought about it.  I want to set a good example for my children so I never give up, I persevere, and I try to have a good time no matter how hard, tedious or unbearable it is.  I’m kind of like the little blue engine….”I think I can, I think I can….I knew I could, I knew I could….”  🙂

Fun Fact: I ran the Inaugural Disneyland Half Marathon just a mere 5 1/2 weeks after giving birth to my daughter.  I think that alone earned me the title “Tough Chik”.  I never realized how difficult it would be recovering from all the comes with giving birth and training 2 days coming home from the hospital.  The great part?  I managed to beat half my co-workers crossing the finish line.  🙂

Name: Christy

Location: Huntley, MT

Sport of Choice: Running

Hobbies: Hiking, horseback riding, reading

2012 Race Plans: Hood to Coast!  Two half marathons, an adventure race and numerous 5 mile, 10k and 5k races.

What makes you a Tough Chik: I run outside in all weather conditions and train alone.  So if the training does not get done   I only have myself to blame.  I run in mud, gravel, cow trails, and have two lucky miles of pavement if the roads are too muddy.

Blog: http://christyruns.com

Fun Fact: I am a redheaded lefty.

Name: Ellen

Location: Georgia

Sport of Choice: Running, Cycling

Hobbies: Greyhound rescue, cooking, reading, movies.

2012 Race Plans: None right now due to an injury.

What make you a Tough Chik: What makes me a tough chik is that I stick up for myself and others. I take others telling me that I cant do something as motivation to succeed. I still am hoping to compete to some degree despite injury and not let it keep me from my passion for sports and competition!

Fun Fact: My husband got me into bike racing and he is a big part in why I ended up racing professionally. He is so encouraging and supportive!

2012 Race Plans: I’m still a Gerber runner, so I am working on breaking some 5k time PRs, I also plan to complete my first 10k by the end of this year.

What makes you a Tough Chik: It is crazy to think that this past year, within 7 months I literally went from being an overweight Couch Potato to training with C25K, to actually participating in my first 5k. And along the way, I lost 27 lbs. and eventually became addicted to running, joining more races and gradually preceding onward to the “Gerber Phase” of being a Runner.   Of course, since all this time I haven’t considered myself as a “Runner,” for some reason in my little peon mind a “Runner” is someone who runs 10ks, Half Marathons, Full Marathons + Triathlons. That my own participation in a couple 5ks is just my struggled attempt at being a Runner. But being a Runner is more than ‘going the distance’, it is literally hard work to prepare yourself mentally and physically for any type of run, whether that being a 5k all the way to a Full Marathon! Just being able to get up off the couch and push past your personal limitations into moving forward and clocking in mileage, whatever the distance might be, is in itself a major accomplishment!  Being able to conquer these barriers regardless of level makes for a true “Runner”.  With that being said, I embrace the new challenges and adventures of running and I am gladly embracing the moniker of being “a runner”. And that is what makes me a Tough Chik!

Blog: fittestfatgirl.tumblr.com

Fun Fact: I secretly enjoy passing up guys on the race course so they can eat my dust at the finish line!

What make you a Tough Chik: As a full-time working mom of two small boys, it is hard to find time do laundry let alone train for a race, but in the past 5 years, I have run over 40 races, several of which I have won or placed in my age group.  I think what makes me a Tough Chik isn’t the number of races I’ve completed, rather, being a role model for my boys by staying fit and active. They see the commitment I have to my health, fitness, and overall well-being and the drive I have to keep at it even though life is hectic. I love that my boys are proud of their mom and that they think it’s cool that their mom likes to get muddy!

Sport of Choice: Mud Runs

Hobbies: Rock Climbing, Hiking, Biking, Cooking, Home Decorating/Home Improvement Projects

2012 Race Plans: Pat’s Run, Warrior Dash, Dirty Six Mud Run, Carlsbad 5000

What makes you a Tough Chik: In the fall of 2008, I was at work and wasn’t feeling well. Thinking I had the flu, I went home after work and lay down. I continued to feel worse so I decided to go to the hospital although I felt silly and figured they would send me home. When I arrived at the emergency room, the doctors told me I was having a massive heart attack. I underwent surgery and had two stents put in. Afterwards, as a part of the recovery process, the doctor sent me to a Cardiac Rehab facility where I began a 36 visit cardio fitness program. They also helped me to get started on a diet that was low in saturated fat. At first, I wasn’t happy about it but then I found that I started to look forward to working out. I lost 30 pounds, I felt great, and as I started to feel more confident, I started trying different activities. I tried indoor rock climbing and found that I loved it. Then I tried a few runs and that was fun too. Then I discovered mud runs and really loved those! Pretty soon, I was exercising almost every day and enjoying it! Now, I love exercising and trying new activities. I feel very lucky to have a second chance at life and that’s why I am a tough chik!
