What makes you a Tough Chik? Perseverance, I never give up, no matter what! I may not be a fast runner, but I finish what I start!
What is the one gadget you CAN’T live without? iPhone
What is your favorite inspirational phrase? John Bingham: ‘The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.’
Fun Fact: I was once the back cover/inside story girl in a Collage Video’s catalog.

Name: Danielle S.
Location: Westbrook, Maine
Sport of Choice: running
Hobbies: Now that I have my son, my “hobbies” have taken a back seat… but other than running, I enjoy spending time with my family, taking photographs, reading, and attempting to learn how to sew.
2014 Race Plans: Mid Winter Classic 10 miler in February, Great Bay Half Marathon in April, Maine Coast Marathon in May, potentially the Pineland Farms 50k, Bradbury Mountain Trail running series, and potentially two fall marathons. I’m tired just looking at that schedule, haha (and I’m sure that wont be all!)
What makes you a Tough Chik? I think just being able to lace up my shoes and get out the door for a run makes me a tough chik (makes anyone a tough chik!)… but I ran a 10k, two 5ks, and two marathons (!!) while pregnant, and bounced back after having him and ran 3 half marathons in 6 weeks, and getting a new shiny PR. Life with a newborn is tough, but running makes me feel so good and helps me be a healthy role model for my son!
What is the one gadget you CAN’T live without? My nalgene water bottle… i know its not a gadget, but I cant live without it!
What is your favorite inspirational phrase? “When you come to the edge of all the light you know and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing one of two things will happen: There will be something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly.” -Patrick Overton

I am now a Respiratory Therapist at a small hospital in southern Maine and I love the work that I do. There are many things in my life that remind me to always keep my mind open to new opportunities. You never know where the road of life may lead you, but its hard to see all the beauty if you keep your eyes closed.

Location: RI / NC
Sport of Choice: Running
Hobbies: Other than running, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have two great kiddos who keep me very active! I enjoy reading, cooking, photography, designing, blogging at, sewing, and watching Project Runway and Top Chef.
2014 Race Plans: I’m hoping to run a late spring marathon to try for another BQ time but I’m also going to be moving from RI to NC at that time so it will be difficult to train. If that doesn’t work out then I’m looking at Air Force Marathon in September as a last chance 2015 BQ time.

I think I will also be running NYC in the fall, as I am the last year grandfathered into the 3 and in rule for the lottery selection!
What make you a Tough Chik: I don’t accept anything less than my best! Running is not something natural for me–it has taken a lot of hard work and dedication to get where I am. I still have a long way to go in order to get where I want to be, and I won’t accept less than 110% of my effort. It’s about inspiring others and showing my daughter that if you put the work in and believe in yourself anything is possible!
What is the one gadget you CAN’T live without? iPhone…it has my music play lists AND a camera…what more do I need?
What is your favorite inspirational phrase? I have a few but if I narrowed it down to two the first would be from Dolvett on the Biggest Loser–“Hard Work; Dedication!” it applies to so many different areas of life–not just running!

My own mantra that I repeat to myself is “Be epic; run fierce; and have bitchin’ focus!”
Fun Fact: I’m moving from RI to NC at the start of the year. It’s bittersweet because I’m leaving my extended family and friends and everything familiar to me and starting a new journey with my husband and kids where we know 1 person. It’s going to be a challenge but w

Ragnar SoCal or BUST – Meet the Tough Chik Team!

28 Mar

I am beyond stoked for Ragnar SoCal!  What is Ragnar you may ask?  According to the Ragnar website:

“Ragnar is the overnight running relay race that makes testing your limits a team sport.  You and 11 of your craziest friends (or 5 of your crazier friends for an ultra team) pile into two vans and tag team running 200(ish) miles, day and night, relay-style. Only one runner hits the road at a time. Each participant runs three times, with each leg ranging between 3-8 miles (OR 12 in our case!) and varying in difficulty. So, from the elite runner down to the novice jogger, it’s the perfect race for anyone.”

I have wanted to compose a Team Tough Chik Ragnar team for years, but with the encouragement of Tough Chik Ambassador, Lisa, I decided that 2014 was going to be the year and So Cal was going to be the place!

We would LOVE for you to follow our adventure!  Below is our team and their individual blogs, twitter and instagram handles.  We will be using the hashtag #TTCRagnar14.  So follow Team Tough Chik and we tough it out down the California coast starting Friday April 4th at 6AM!  It will be EPIC!

Here is Team Tough Chik Ragnar So Cal 2014!

2014 Race Plans: Planning on a marathon in April and hopefully an ultra (50k) in September or October.

What is your favorite inspirational phrase? I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phil 4:13

Name: Cheryl G.

Location: Salisbury, NC

Sport of Choice: I’ve always been athletic. I ran high school track and played field hockey. Then ran on a scholarship at Syracuse. Then life and “stuff” got in the way – I gained some weight and finally just decided it was time to make a change! So…I started walking and then running. While I ran track way back when – I always just ran short sprints and hurdles…never distance…so this was new. I’ve only been running since June 2013 – but LOVE it and plan to push myself more in 2014!

Hobbies: I’m a crafter. I do glass etching (have a little business – Enlightened Engravings) and love holiday crafts. I’m also a reading nut!

2014 Race Plans: I am running my first official 10K in February 2014 at the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend. EEEKKKK! In 2014 I plan to run many more 5K’s because I just think it’s a fun distance. I love to push myself and try to PR at each one! I want to run a 25min 5K (small steps!) and place in my age group – as that always seems to elude me!

Location: San Marcos, CA

Sport of Choice: Running and just about any other form of athletic torture for fitness.

Hobbies: Labs and More Rescue (transport, fostering and weekend adoptions), bike rides, hiking, reading, movies and spending time with my family and friends.

2014 Race Plans: After the mileage I’ve put in running 2013 miles to raise $2013 for my lab rescue group in 2013, I thought I’ve taken a break. But my passion for running has already got the first half of 2014 somewhat scheduled. I’d like to upgrade my triple crown medals, but haven’t decided yet. So far some half marathons and 1 full are on the schedule.

What makes you a Tough Chik? I have always worked out and fell in love with running about 5 years ago. Being a Tough Chik to me is challenging myself to push harder or just accomplish the race set before me no matter how “tough”. I will always listen to my body and every race will be different, but I will always “tough” it out to do the best I can.

What is the one gadget you CAN’T live without? iPhone – it’s my music, and my saving grace when I’m stuck and need a ride or food/drink or help for that matter.

What is your favorite inspirational phrase? 1 Cor. 9:24-27

Hebrews 12:1-3

What makes you a Tough Chik?  I just might be 2 scoops of crazy. I run. 4-5 times a week. It didn’t used to be that way. I used to be in very good shape. Then, I spent a lot of time on my butt.

Then 40 came and I got off my butt.  At first it was walking, then running. But I kept moving.  Went from 5km to 10km to a half marathon.  After accomplishing something that I thought I could never do I realized I was tougher than I thought. So I signed up for a marathon! I have never been so excited and terrified at the same time on race day! And then … SO proud of myself.

Since 2011 I have run 21 half marathons. Not fast, but I run. I love how it feels. Getting tough with myself has helped me find my fun, fit, fabulous self. If you don’t love it, don’t do it. Do it, be it, live it, LOVE it. My mantra really is that 40 is a FABULOUS time to try something new. I am slightly terrified at the thought of training for another marathon! But I know I can. In rediscovering running, I have found passion, strength, self-esteem and confidence. And have met some amazing friends.  I have dug deep and discovered I can do things I never ever thought possible. Heck after trying trail running, half marathons and few marathons, and relay races  … maybe trying a duathlon is in my future! I am excited to see where my Tough will take me.
